connecting cultures through global media literacy

Just finishing its sixth year, the Salzburg Academy on Media and Global Change convenes nearly sixty international students and a dozen faculty in Salzburg each summer to discuss media’s influence around the world. The students, who come from Latin America, the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa, have been responsible for the creation of an in-depth global media literacy curriculum, now in use at more than 100 universities on six continents, and used by UNESCO as a teaching tool. Students and faculty also examine different sectors of media on a global scale, looking at the shining examples and the shortcomings of media coverage in the last few years. This global dynamic, coupled with the enthusiasm the students bring, uniquely positions the Academy as a vehicle for worldwide change in media. You can view the results of the students’ work at: www.salzburg.umd.edu.
In six years, the Academy has gathered over 320 students and 55 faculty who have created a new framework for global media literacy education.
